Dream Story - Part 5

His friends wolf whistled and he looked up at me.
"Well, hi!" he looked surprised.
"Hi," I smiled at him.
He stood up, never losing contact with my eyes. He kissed me. It was the best kiss I had ever tasted. From then on we were going out. It was great. I was going out with the coolest guy in school! He said Kitty was history too. I was in heaven. I fell back on my bed smiling. I went to sleep full of glee.
"Hi."
"Hi, sleepy head," I could hear Roger smiling down the line, "Minny?"
"Yes?"
"Are you sure you are doing the right thing going out with him?"
"Of course, Roger! Why wouldn't I be?"
"Well, he is supposed to be a player, Minny."
I bit my lip, "Well..."
"Well..." he copy catted.
"I really, really, like him."
"Well, it's up to you sweetheart. I'll be here when you are teary eyed and broken. You know that don't you?"
"Of course, silly! But why am I going to be broken hearted?"
There was silence.
"See you later Roger."
"See you later honey."
I nibbled at some Chocolate as I was thinking. I was going to babysit for Sandy again tonight. Sam would be there with me. So I don't really know why they hired me but they said he wasn't up to looking after his little sister. I think the real reason is he still wanted me to have a job even when he was spending this Saturday with me. He had talked his parents into keeping me on.
I arrived at the house. Nervous of our first kind of date. I was chewing on my lip. A very bad habit of mine when I'm nervous. he answered the door.
"My parents are already out. Come in," he smiled at me and my heart oozed.
My legs started shaking. I could feel the heat off his body as I walked past. We sat down with Sandy. Once I had tucked her in and kissed her on the head at nine we headed down stairs and snuggled up under a blanket to watch a movie. It was lovely. I was having the best time. Nothing could ruin it.
About a week later we were going to meet up for dinner at an Italian restaurant. I had got Roger to come over to check out my outfit.
"Now I'm no fashion expert but I can tell you whether you look good in it or not."
"Alright, what do you think? Is it too much?" I was wearing a red, sparkly, halter neck dress.
I swirled round in it and looked in the mirror.
"It's - beautiful. You look - great," he seemed surprised.
"Did you not think I could look good?!" I put my hands on my hips.
"Um...there's not anything I can say that will not upset you, is there?"
"No. As long as you don't say my bum looks big in this!" we both laughed.
We fell forwards with our hands on each others shoulders. It was an awkward moment. Very close. We pulled apart.
"I'll - see you t-tomorrow Minny," he ran out.
I arrived at the restaurant five minutes early. Sam was leaning against the wall kissing Kitty. They looked up as I stepped nearer.
"Sam," the soul had left my voice.
"Minny. I-"
"-You know what, I don't want to know. Your dumped Sam! I never want to see you again but I have to at school on Monday! Ah!" I run away pulling at my hair.
Tears ran down my face. Sam caught up with me and grabbed my arm.
"Look, I didn't want to do this. She means nothing to me. It's you I want," he tried to smile at me but it had lost it's usual sparkle.
I suppose I didn't put him on a pedestal any more. I saw him for who he truly was. Scum. He may be handsome and charismatic but he has a wandering eye. I think that is an underestimate. He goes out with at least two girls at a time. Who was I kidding thinking I could tame his unruly heart? I was in some sort of fantasy world. Now I had come down to earth with a crashing thump.

I headed home and lay on my bed. I was lying on my stomach with my legs up in the air. I instantly dialed Roger's number.
"Hello?"
"Hi, Roger, it's me, Minny."
"Why are you calling me?"
He sounded weird, I snivelled, "He was with her!"
"Oh, darling."
"What am I going to do?! I'll see them at school on Monday and I don't think I can cope!"
"You've just got to hold your head up sweetheart and move on with your life."
"Right, OK. Will you be there with me?"
"I'll be holding your hand all the way, honey."
"Rog?"
"Yep?" he breathed down the phone.
You could hear it muffling the receiver, "Do you think I'll ever find a guy who doesn't break my heart?"
"Oh, you'll find one alright, if you look in the right place."
What did that mean? I'm not sure. I wonder if he meant something else by it as well.
On Monday it was awful. Gossip was going all round school.
"Do you fancy me?" I asked him as we were walking down the corridor outside.
It was a break, "NO! Are you stupid?! Have you not noticed how I look at people?!"
"No!" I was shocked about how bitter he sounded.
'You, you know you only care about yourself! When have you ever asked me how I'm feeling, huh?! Is it not obvious?!"
"NO!" I screamed, I had started crying, we were out side now.
"I'm gay!" he bellowed at me.
It really scared me how he was shouting at me. When he said that I went into shock.
"What?! Are you kidding?"
"No, Minny! I've worked it out. I'm gay," he whispered.
This was some of the biggest news I'd ever heard.
I was starting to twig, "That's why you wanted to give me that makeover. That's why you've never had a girlfriend. That's why you said no to that girl that just about every other boy fancies. you're gay."
"Thank you! Thank you for accepting it."
We had calmed down now.
"Do you still want to be my friend?"
I hugged him. I kissed him on the cheek.
"Of course I do silly! You are my best friend and nothing will ever change that, nothing."
He kissed me on the lips, "I always did know I could count on you babe."
We linked arms and walked off to the hills across the field, "Now we've got to find you a guy to go out with."
He pushed my nose with his finger and I laughed, "You cheeky sod!" he was surprised, "As soon as you find out I'm gay you're already hooking me up with people!
Next weekend we had found a gay night club in the yellow pages that was in town. I put on some mad go-go boots I had found in a charity shop. They were glittery pink. I had curled my hair and put it up in a bun kind of Breakfast at Tiffany's style. Audrey Hepburn - I wish. I had pearl earrings in pink and sparkly pink gloves.
"Are you going to a club or a fancy dress party?" he asked me, hands on hips.
"Uh!" I tutted, "You don't look too bad yourself, thank you very much!" I poked him in the chest.
He was wearing a red and green checked shirt and dark blue, faded jeans.
"I don't feel too bad myself, thank you," he looked very smug.
He was very handsome I suppose.
We headed for the club. 5t was very dark. There was fake smoke spewing everywhere, all along the floor so you could only see people down to their midriff. So much for my go-go boots. There were flashing, coloured lights going off at all angles. The music was really loud so we had to shout at each other.
"Want to head to the bar," I had my mouth near his ear to speak.
"OK," he replied in mine.
I ordered lemonade and orange juice mixed together, half and half. He cheekily tried an alcoholic cocktail even though he was underage.

"Just seeing what I can get away with," the bar man winked at him and we both laughed.
"Do you think there is anyone our age here?"
"I don't think so," he looked around.
"Hello," a sneary man had walked up to us, 'What to come round to my place?"
"No thanks," Rog replied, we backed off.
"Hi," someone touched my shoulder, I jumped, "Oh, sorry. I didn't mean to scare you. What's your name?"
"I'm not gay," I said, Roger was sniggering behind me, "Shut up!" I hissed at him, elbowing him in the arm.
"Ow! That hurt!"
"Well, sorry, Mr 'I-think-it'll-be-OK-to-go-to-a-club-all-on-our-own-where-everyone-is-older-than-us-and-creepy!'"
"Thanks a lot!" the butch looking woman said, "When I was at school I went out with other girls in my year. I didn't hang around in bars all day."
"Oh, thanks for the advice, um..."
"...Natalie, Natalie Green, pleased to meet you."
"I'm Minny Drover," I explained, shaking hands, she was quite formal like most adults are - I think.
"Roger, Roger Bright," Roger shook her hand too.
"Now why don't you two run along home before you meet someone really nasty and get into real trouble. What would your parents think if they knew you where here?"
"They think we are at a friend's party," I cringed.
"I haven't told my mum yet," Roger looked down, ashamed.
"Don't worry. If your mum really loves you she won't mind whether you are gay or not! My foster parents didn't."
"You were fostered?" Roger asked.
"Yep," she said.
"But they have to except you because they are lucky to get you since they probably can't have any babies or anything anyway," I added.
"No, actually they already had a child. They chose to adopt me even though they could have had another one themselves. Everyone is lucky to have a child no matter where they are from anyway. Even you," she pointed at me.
"Bye then."
"Bye," she smiled, waving.
"Bye and thanks!" Rog called as I dragged him out the door.
We tumbled into the street, laughing.
"What was all that about?" I asked.
"I know! Some of the people in there were so weird and lonely looking!"
"I hope we never have to go in there again!" I said, bumping into him as we walked along.
"You never know, when I'm older I could be the sad, lonely person wondering around the bar, trying to pick someone up for one night of not feeling lonely."
We both giggled as he over acted. Sighing and putting a hand across his head, faining being in pain.
Next month Roger had found Oscar. He worked in the local music shop and was great at playing the saxophone. He had left school recently. He was a year older than us. He wrote Rog a song and he was hooked. They were an item now.

I was sitting in a cafe feeling bored. All my friends were busy and Roger was out with Oscar - again! Suddenly Freddy walked in.
"Is this seat taken?"
"No," I was surprised he wanted to sit with me after what had happened.
"How are you getting on then?"
"Not very well actually," I leant my cheek on my hand, I had my elbow on the table.
I put my finger in my hot chocolate and sucked the cream off my finger, "I heard about you and Sam."
"It's not that. It's just that Roger has his new boyfriend Oscar and I feel left out. He never wants to meet up any more."
"Maybe I could be your new friend?" Freddy looked deep into my eyes.
His electric blue ones startled me, I felt like he could read my mind, his spiky, blond and black hair stuck up from his head, "Do you want to go out with me?"
"Not right now thanks," he smiled.
"You can't be my best friend but you can be my friend. Do you not hate me for kissing you and then going off with Sam?"
I was curious, "No," Freddy stoppped for a second to think, "I'm just more careful with you now, I'm not going to lay my heart on the line and just go out with you before I know you like I would have before."
"It's funny, before you were the one chasing me an now I'm the one asking you out!" I looked at my mug.
"Look, let's just be friends."
"That's what the girl's supposed to say!" I swung my spoon around splashing hot chocolate everywhere.
"Careful!" he grabbed my hand.
We looked into each other's eyes. Our heads drew closer. he pulled away.
